Interview / 28.06.2023

In our series "Meet our experts" we regularly introduce you to our experts from all areas of the Delvag Group. Today: Amal Boutziri, trainee at Delvag I Albatros.

Amal, what profession are you learning at Delvag I Albatros?
I'm going to be an insurance and finance clerk. Theoretically, I could work anywhere in the insurance industry afterwards. Or I could continue my education later and specialise, for example in the area of finance. If you have a high school diploma, you can also go on to university. The training is very diverse and offers many career opportunities afterwards.

At Delvag I Albatros I am with a special insurer for aviation and transport. A very exciting insurance field for me. At first I didn't know what Delvag I Albatros did exactly. I just thought it was an industrial insurer. But now I find the specialisation great, of course!

How did you find out about the training at Delvag I Albatros?
I searched for a traineeship on the Internet. The ad had been online for a while when I found it. So I called Delvag I Albatros directly and asked if I could still apply. At that time, I had one of my current training managers on the phone and everything went very quickly after that.

What is the training process like at Delvag I Albatros?
On the first day, you get your hardware. Everything is shown and explained and then the introductory week starts. This is not yet directly about insurance topics, but about organisational matters, employee benefits, company structure and organisational chart, etc. You also get to know your sponsor, mentor and training management.

Sponsor, mentor, training management - who does what?
The sponsor is nearing the end of his or her own training or has recently completed it. He or she answers questions about vocational school, exams and reports that have to be prepared, and of course you can ask anything that comes to mind. Since you are the same age, the inhibition threshold is also lower right from the start. That's why it's great that this person exists.

The mentor is supposed to inspire and show what a career after training can look like. The person is a manager in a department and very experienced. He or she is an advisor and confidant and is always available if you have a problem.

The training manager is the superior contact person for the entire training period. He or she makes the deployment plan, for example, supported by a person from the HR department. Together they organise the training and help with holiday planning. The training manager is also always available for questions.

What stages do you go through in your training?
During the training, you go through all the departments of Delvag Group. You are there for a few weeks or months at a time. This gives you an insight into the work of your colleagues and, of course, you also get to work with them yourself. The training begins in the administrative areas such as the communications department or corporate development. This is followed by the insurance-specific departments. The training is rounded off with the finance department.

I also have a so-called shadowing day with one of our board members - in my case Martin Schmatz. I then learn what a board member actually does and what his daily routine looks like.

At the end of the training, you still have a short period of free time, which is not yet firmly planned. Here, if resources allow, you can work again in a department that you particularly like and in which you might want to focus later on.

Do you like your training at Delvag I Albatros?
I really enjoy the training and would recommend it 100 percent. You learn a lot of new things: prior knowledge is not necessary and you get to know the aviation world in particular from the ground up. And of course you also learn a lot about yourself, for example about your strengths and weaknesses. What helps: From my point of view, Delvag I Albatros is a very open employer and offers a lot of room for your own ideas and independent work.

I wanted an employer with a good, harmonious atmosphere and I am very happy to have found that here. Everyone here is nice and treats each other with respect.

What have been your highlights in training so far?
Every traineeship at Delvag I Albatros is different and every trainee goes on different business trips, for example.

I had several highlights during my training: One of them was definitely the business trip to a customer in Zurich. There I looked at an engine damage together with a colleague and an expert. It was the first time I had seen an open engine and I got a feeling for what such damage really looks like. Everything was explained to us in great detail and, of course, it was also about how much such damage costs.

Another highlight was an eight-day cargo course I took in Frankfurt. Here I was able to get a first-hand look at the world of an aviation company and also take away a few things for myself. Of course, you know aircraft from holiday trips, but you never really get as close to a plane as you do here: when have you ever stood directly in front of an engine or touched an aircraft from the outside? I completed the course, which I did together with Lufthansa Cargo trainees, with a Cargo Basic Training and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations certificate.

Finally, I was also in Salzburg. There, the focus was on drone insurance. I learned a lot about this special topic.

What advice would you give to new trainees?
In my opinion, the most important thing is to stay true to yourself. I think that's very important. You should also always address problems and ask all the questions you have.

Work is also not comparable to school. You have to get used to it at first. Compared to school, working days are long. I think it's quite normal to be less concentrated in the afternoon at the beginning. But you get used to it.

When do you complete your training and do you already know what comes afterwards?
I expect to complete my training on 31 January 2024. After that, I would definitely like to stay with Delvag Group.

Thank you very much for the interview.
